Cavs Ink West To Multi-Year Deal

POSTED: 2:25 pm EDT September 12, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Cleveland Cavaliers announced the signing of guard Delonte West to a multi-year contract on Friday. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

West, 25, was acquired by the Cavaliers on February 21 as part of a three- team, 11-player deal with the Seattle SuperSonics and Chicago Bulls that also brought Wally Szczerbiak and Ben Wallace to Cleveland. The fourth-year player averaged 8.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 61 games with the Cavs and Sonics last season, including 10.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 26 games with Cleveland

"This is the first time since I was offered a scholarship at St. Joe's that I feel like I am valued as a person and a player. (Cleveland owner) Dan Gilbert and the Cavaliers have shown me that they value me as a person and a player and that was the most important thing to me," said West.

The St. Joseph's product averaged 10.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 steals in the playoffs for the Cavs and hit the game-winning three-pointer in Cleveland's 100-97 win over the Washington Wizards in Game 4 of their first-round series. That win gave Cleveland a 3-1 lead in the series, which it won in six games.

"We have consistently communicated our desire to keep Delonte as a member of this basketball team. His tenacity helps us on both ends of the floor and his defensive play certainly reflects how we want to play the game," said Cleveland general manager Danny Ferry.

In 240 NBA games, including 156 starts, West has averaged 9.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists.
