Man Accused Of Making Bomb Threat Out On Bond

Suspect Could Face Up To 20 Years In Prison, $1M In Fines

A passenger who made a bomb threat aboard a Continental flight out of Cincinnati Monday night has been charged with one count of disruption of a flight crew.

John Azzinaro, 37, of Oak Ridge N.J., allegedly told a passenger that there was a bomb on the flight.

Azzinaro appeared in U.S. District Court Tuesday afternoon. He is out of jail on $25,000 bond, but Magistrate Judge Patricia Hemann put a tight leash on the suspect, NewsChannel5 reported.

The man can only fly between New Jersey and Ohio while he awaits his day in court. He also can't drink within three hours of a flight or while in flight and has to undergo drug and alcohol treatment.

The subdued Azzinaro in court was very different from the man fellow passengers recalled from the Monday night Continental flight, NewsChannel5 reported.

"We will look into any indications that the individual was intoxicated or any mental health issues. But at this point all we know is that he made these statements and he was arrested for making these statements," said Scott Wilson, of the Cleveland FBI office.

The 37-year-old faces up to 20 years in prison, $1 million in fines and three years of supervised release if convicted.

The flight out of Cincinnati was diverted to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport at about 9 p.m. Monday. The flight was heading to Newark.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport spokeswoman Pat Smith said it wasn't immediately known what caused his confused behavior or whether he was somehow impaired when he allegedly told a passenger sitting next to him that he had a bomb.

The man was arrested Monday night and was being questioned by local and federal law enforcement.

There were about three crew members aboard the pland and 15 passengers. No one was injured.

Officials searched the plane and no bomb was found.

Once off the plane, each passenger was isolated, searched and questioned.

After staying overnight in Cleveland, the passengers were expected to take a plane Tuesday morning to their appointed designations.
