Be Prepared With Disaster Supply Kit

UPDATED: 12:23 p.m. EDT November 11, 2002

Tornadoes come in all shapes and sizes. Some of them can cause little damage, while others cause major damage.

A tornado is measured by the Fujita Tornado Damage Scale.

The scale goes from F0, slightly damaged to F5, complete destruction.

Fujita Damage Scale
  • F0 -- Winds less than 73 mph
  • F1 -- Winds 73-112 mph
  • F2 -- Winds 113-157 mph
  • F3 -- Winds 158-206 mph
  • F4 -- Winds 207-260 mph
  • F5 -- Winds greater than 260 mph

What To Do When A Tornado Hits

No matter what type of tornado comes in your area, it is important for you to get to the basement.

It's also important that you and your family have a Home Tornado Plan. In this plan you should pick a place where family members can gather if a tornado is headed your way. You must keep this meeting place uncluttered.

If you're in a high-rise building, you may not have enough time to go to the lowest floor, so pick a place in a hallway in the center of the building.

Another course of action that you need to take is Prepare A Disaster Supplies Kit:

  • First Aid Kit And Essential Medications
  • Battery-Powered Radio, Flashlight And Extra Batteries
  • Canned Food And Can Opener
  • Bottled Water
  • Sturdy Shoes And Work Gloves

It's also important that in this kit there are written instructions that explain how to turn off your home's utilities.

Another good idea for you to do in case of a tornado is to listen to the radio, and watch your television for important updates and information.

And if for some reason you are caught outside during a tornado, find a ditch or a low-lying area where you can lay flat and protect your neck, hands and head.
