Teen Charged In Attorney Attack Turns Self In At WEWS

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A suspect in connection with the brutal beating of Shaker Heights attorney Kevin McDermott turned himself in to police at the NewsChannel5 studios Monday night. The teen, Demetrius Lang, 16, and his father talked with anchor Leon Bibb. Lang's father told Bibb that he was concerned for his son's safety and wanted to surrender to Cleveland Police for transfer to Shaker Heights. Lang did not talk, but his father said his son did not feel comfortable with Shaker Heights police officers. It's unclear why. Bibb said Lang did not talk about the attack. In addition to Lang, two other teens have been arrested in connection with the beating. They have been charged. Lang was arraigned Tuesday afternoon, and maintained his innocence. Joshua Bray, 15, was also supposed to be arraigned, but it was delayed because of a motion filed by his attorney.Lang will be back in court later this month.The two other suspects are 19 and 15. They are Cleveland residents. Earlier Monday, three others were arrested. Jerome Edwards, 17 and Brandon Goowdin, 16, appeared in court and denied the charges. WEWS is not naming a 14-year-old charged in connection with the beating.The teens are being held in the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center. The adult is in police custody.McDermott, 52, suffered a shattered leg and a beating to the face. He was taken to Hillcrest Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He now has seven pins and a plate in his leg. The investigation is ongoing.
