OXFORD, Ohio -- It's not rare to see students walking at Miami University. That's what Oxford police said a 20-year-old student was doing around 4 a.m. Saturday when two men in a white van grabbed her from behind and tried to kidnap her on Beech Street. The student was able to get away, but that doesn't stop other students like Colleen Sowislo from being concerned, NewsChannel5 sister station WCPO-TV reported."In the back of your mind, you're not thinking anything is going to happen to you. But it's the growing up phase where you have to realize that yes, these things do happen. Be smart, travel in packs," Sowislo said.Brianna McLaughlin lives on Beech Street and said she's shocked."It's very close to uptown. Usually there's a lot of people here so sometimes you don't feel as scared when you walk home," McLaughlin said. Both students said they understand why the girl was walking by herself because they've done it."I hate to admit it, but I have walked home by myself. I have been in the past very naive," said Sowislo."I used to, but as I get older and I realize that there are dangers out there, now I refuse to by myself. Even when I get off of work, I have a co-worker walk me home," said McLaughlin.Students said officials at Miami University sent out e-mails letting them know about the attempted kidnapping.Oxford police are investigating, but are not releasing the student's name.
