Teen Athlete Collapses, Dies While Playing Football

LAKE COUNTY, Ohio -- A Lake County teenager suddenly died on a football field, and his family and friends are now grieving the loss of the young man.The parents of 16-year-old Tyler Cole also had a message of thanks for all those who tried to save their son's life.You hear about it on the news, when it's other people, and you think, 'God bless those poor people. How are they going to get through it?' I guess we are going to find out," said mom Karen ColeKen and Karen Cole are living a parent's nightmare. It started on Sunday when two of their children were playing a game of pick-up football behind Wickliffe High SchoolTyler suddenly collapsed, and police got two 911 calls for help. The teen was rushed to a hospital, where he died.The Eastlake North High School junior was a star athlete who worked out five days a week. In fact, as a sophomore he was named wrestler of the year, usually an honor reserved for upperclassmen."We don't believe the victim in this case was struck or injured that led to his death. We believe may have had a medical problem," said Lt. Pat Hengst, of Wickliffe police.He was a good friend to many and a loyal son. His parents said he was in good physical condition. He was checked out by a doctor after his father found out that he had a heart condition."We had him checked out before sports physicals. We had EKGs done because he played football and he was a wrestle, so as I found out I had a problem, we had him checked," said Ken Cole.At 16, Tyler was an organ donor. His parents said they were told his organs will help 50 to 70 people.Tyler's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Erieside Church.
