Earthquake Shakes Ashtabula
No Damage Reported From 2.5 Magnitude Quake

ASHTABULA, Ohio -- For the second time in less than a month, an earthquake rattled northeast Ohio.
The Ohio Seismic Network said that the quake hit Ashtabula at 8:44 p.m. Wednesday night. It registered 2.5 on the Richter scale. A number of people reported feeling the small earthquake on the southeast side of Ashtabula. No damage was reported. The epicenter was believed to be near the intersection of state Route 11 and state Route 20. That's in the vicinity of a 4.5-magnitude mainshock and several aftershocks that occurred in January 2001, the network reported.
That area contains an injection well that apparently has triggered seismic activity in recent years, according to the Ashtabula Star Beacon. The newspaper reported that an injection well sends brine or other unwanted liquid waste into porous rock, and the waste is pushed deep into the rock's pores via pumps, according to information from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Some wells can stretch two miles below the surface, according to the agency. Columbia University geologists are expected to come to lakeshore area to study the quakes. The event was recorded by seismograph stations of the Ohio Seismic Network and the Geological Survey of Canada seismic network. You might remember that a 3.5 magnitude quake was measured near Fairport Harbor on June 30. Click here for more information on earthquake safety.
