Planes Flipped, Tossed At Burke Lakefront Airport

CLEVELAND -- Hurricane-force winds and thunderstorms rolled across the North Coast Tuesday. Burke Lakefront Airport sustained extensive damage. There were reports of aircraft flying without any pilots during the storm, NewsChannel5 reported. NewsChopper5 pilot John Campos saw aircraft being ripped from the tie-down area and whipped sideways across the airport. He said it looked like a hurricane. One of those helicopters was a local television station's chopper. All the damaged planes were empty and there were no injuries And in the parking lot, dozens of trees were left twisted in the high winds. Several large trailers used as temporary offices flipped over. Doppler5000's Stephanie Roberts said that the damage was caused by straight-line winds in a microburst.
